Default questions

This is at once one of the most exciting and at the same time frustrating times in any new MMO. Exciting because, of course, there is so much to do, explore and see – so many new things to try out. Frustrating, of course, because of having to learn a whole new system. Fortunately it doesn’t seem like the learning curve will be as high as it was in Eve Online. Unfortunately, there are no tutorials like Eve-online. So I am forced to resort to questions. Forgive me if starting up with my questions, now that I am actually playing the game, gets on anyone’s nerves. I don’t know where else to go to, to learn.

Short Background: So far I have rolled up a dwarf paladin, a wood elf ranger, and rolled up and played a goblin warrior. From these classes stem my first questions. Yes I am used to Wow, but I want to learn this system!

1.)Since I have a warrior, I have found no way yet to heal myself. It seems I regain hit points fairly rapidly, but that is not always the case in all MMO’s (I have played EQ1, UO, Eve Online, guild wars and Wow). Is there any way for me to heal myself as a warrior? Bandages? Potions? (if only potions is there a way to learn to make them?

2.)Ranger class: I have also “rolled up” a ranger (a wood elf). I am used to a ranger class (i.e. hunter) where I have a pet that can take the aggro. Is there any way for a ranger in this game to have a pet that takes the aggro while she shoots at the mob from range?

3.)Paladin class: I recently received a comment from a friend in Vanguard (who unfortunately I almost never hear from) who said “guess what? Paladins are tanks in this game!” Is this true? I am used to the role of a paladin being “sit in the back, heal and buff and stay out of the way of the grownups” What is the general attitude toward paladins in this game? Do they do a lot less damage then warriors? Can they really heal themselves as I have heard?

4.)Player owned housing: When I think of player owned housing I think of the days I spent in Ultima Online. I have read articles that said there are no instances in this MMO. That being the case, I am wondering how they are going to stop the player owned housing situation from being like it was in UO. It got to the point where it was just some vast megalopolis – to just ride across the land you had to dodge between the houses. What form does the player owned housing look like? What about boats. I hear you can build boats. In UO if you had a boat there was a time when they would “despawn” if you logged out – how does it work here?

5.)Are there actual cities? So far, playing my goblin all I have seen is a beach and some surrounding woods. Okay I only played for one evening, but I was just wondering.

6.)Does anyone know of good guild that I can join?

Thanks for putting up with all of the questions.

Playing with a friend who heals, buying health regeneration food, or waiting for your normal regen are your only healing options as a warrior afaik.

Paladins are excellent tanks in Vanguard.

There are the most beautiful cities I've ever seen in a MMORPG in Vanguard, the goblins aren't really an advanced, civilized race :)

Suggest one. Other than a PVP server. Right now I am on the Rp server.

Also that leaves the questions about the ranger and player owned housing. Thanks so much for the answers!!

I never played UO, but housing in VG is for the most part restricted so they are kept neat and clean and out of the way. So I don't think you will have to dodge houses out in the middle of content...it was said there were a finite number of housing plots, but I don't know if it will become a problem later on in life

There are 3 different housing styles...Kojani, Thestran, and Qalian...each with different Tiers based on the level of the crafter...so all the houses will mesh with their surroundings...

Boats are also player made and once purchased, are yours until you destroy them...they also come in different tiers with the higher quality ones being able to travel further off shore and to remote islands that have yet to be discovered (and I'm sure populated)

*sees herself on the deck of a tall ship*

Yarrrrrr.....

Any idea if the ships have any sort of storage capacity? So how does all this "Player housing and player ships" work? If I want a ship I want to start down the right path that can lead to one.

The other thing I wonder about are there any combat or non-combat pets in vanguard?

Thanks for all the help and answers to a new player.

Ships do have storage capacity in the form of chests that you can place on them, but I think for the time being they have been removed to get the bugs worked out

Artificers make ships...more specifically the carpenters(sp?) line of the artificer path makes ships...the other line makes houses...well the primary components anyway...sails (boats) and bracers (houses) have to get from the other crafters.

So you will have to decide which one you want to make, b/c you can't have both on the same character...

There are some quests that will give you a non combat pet that will hang out with you...and several classes that get combat pets (Shaman, necro, sorcs(?))

Rangers I BELIEVE (i.e. don't quote me) get a pet they can summon for a short duration to help out in sticky situations...the last time I heard anything about it though was in beta, so don't hold me to it.

Ask questions, that's what we're here for

1. No
2. No - be a necro, the only real pet class (shaman bear can tank some)
3. Paladins can heal, I think they get one heal though. They are good tanks, doesn't seem to be a lot at higher lvl, might want to check out some paladin boards.
4. Houses are on specified Plots, and will eventually be thier own little cities with Diplomacy and all that.
5. There are some huge cities, and some not so huge (but nice) cities.

Boats - are expensive and do not despawn, they are supposed to have storage, just like your mount does (saddlebags). In order to make a boat you need five rare components, so get harvesting :)
You need rares to build your house too. There are some pictures on the web for housing, they are pretty cool but you won't see any finished in-game yet I don't think.

Yes, there are combat pets...Dark Elf racial trait is one. Druid has a weak in-combat pet.
Shaman and Necro are the pet classes. Necro gets the Abomination and Shaman gets a Phoenix, Wolf, or Bear depending on chosen path.

Thankyou everyone for being so patient with my questions (I am learing).

So how do I learn to be an artificer? Can I have only one craft skill per character?

Usually in your starting city (don't know what race you are) there is a general crafting person that will start you on your way...you'll go through a tutorial that will give you some tools, clothes, recipies...explain work orders and what not...shouldn't be too hard to find the crafting section of most cities (plus you can ask a guard)

You guessed it, only one crafting profession per character.

Also, don't forget to pick up harvesting (you get to pick two) Your choices are reaping, sowing, mining, quarrying, and lumberjacking

Artificers use stone and wood, so think about that before you decide crafting/harvesting profession

Right now I am playing a gobline and wood elf, I may go to dwarf paladin as my main. If I take artificer as my crafting and want to built a house or a ship should I choose harvesting lumber? Or would I be better off with stone? I understand that Dwarves get a racial bonus to mining. Is this the same as harvesting stone?

Again thanks for being so incredibly patient with a new player.
