I'm an avid reader and Martin's Ice and Fire series is my favorite by far. And to the OP, if the normal "good guy goes against impossible odds to defeat evil" fantasy flavor is not your style, you need to look at this series. It's very gritty, very brutal and far and away my favorite.

The OP I made is just a cut paste of an article on the net so the opinions in it are the authors not mine heh. I've read the series and have been impatiently waiting for the next book since 3 days after the last one was released.

Also really good reading if your looking for something else is The Malazan Books of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. That series right up there with Ice and Fire, if not better.
